Like any other motorsport, a Formula 1 race can be
won or lost in the pits. The airframes and engines require
continuous attention and "tweaking." Also, aircraft
must be moved out of the pits and towed to their starting
positions for each days race with strict adherence to the
time schedule.Zarrina is lucky to have a
top notch pit crew. Crew Chief for the 2003 races was Ib Hansen
who owns National Aeronautics Co., which markets Cassutt plans
and components. Ib is "Mr. Cassutt" and an experienced
race pilot in his own right. In 1993 Ib was Formula 1 "Rookie
of the Year." Ib was assisted by Ted Lemen, a retired
Lockheed engineer. Ted is an experienced homebuilder who flies
a beautiful Midget Mustang which he built. Dave Bessemier,
a retired machinist also assisted the crew this year. Dave
races his Smith Sidewinder in cross country events. The team
was rounded out by Dick Young, a retired Xerox executive and
experienced Private Pilot. Dick is also team owner and pilot
Smokey Young's father. Two more members of the team who provided
invaluable assistance were Ib Hansen's wife Susan and son
Michael. Michael provided the majority of the fine photographs
you see on this website.
